Following a particularly meteoric 2018, a year that’s taken them from word-of-mouth London unknowns to one of the UK’s most talked about new artists, Sports Team have just announced a UK headline tour including a date at London’s Electric Ballroom. We caught up with the band to find out a little more about them.

Having first released music in January with their Winter Nets EP, the following months have been good to the band with single ‘Kutcher’ named as Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record in the World’, ‘Camel Crew’ declared Noisey’s ‘best song of 2018 (so far)’ and Beverly Rose’ winning Steve Lamacq‘s Round Table. The band finished the summer headlining the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds before frontman Alex Rice was named as one of Vogue’s ‘50 Hottest Boys in the World’.

That said, it’s been at live shows where the band have earned their reputation with September’s sold out headline show at London’s 800 capacity SCALA, providing their self-coined “Robbie at Knebworth moment’’, something of a coronation, one that saw the six-piece deliver on the buzz that surrounded their early appearances.

It’s off the back of this success that Sports Team have just announced their biggest headline show to date with a night at London’s 1500 capacity Electric Ballroom, a coup for a band less than a year into their career, you can purchase tickets here. Alongside this flagship show, the band will play 11 headline dates across the UK. We caught up with the band ahead of their shows to find out a little more about them…

Three words to describe our music…

Lyrical, energetic, yours

Favourite ever film…

That one where Jake Thackray goes round Northern villages and talks shop.

Favourite instagram account…

We met Spanish comedian and Spanish household name Jorges Cremades on tour with Hinds. I’m skill deciphering his unique brand of humour but I like the challenge.

The best venue we’ve played…

Scala, and The Caves in Edinburgh

The song we can’t listen to…

Had a sober karaoke night where I heard Henry take 3 passes at Natasha Bedingfield’s Unwritten in Manchester, that song’s slightly dulled for me. Nice update from Sigrid recently though.

The worst job we’ve ever had…

Oli worked stacking boxes in a warehouse for 3 years. He was finally replaced by a machine

Our favourite meal to cook…

Meat Grewl or Cassoulet.

If we were in a tribute band it would be…

AC/DC, Bon Scott era

Our favourite word….

AC/DC

If we had a superpower we’d want it to be….

The ability to present an engaging cookery programme about the Languedoc region.

If we could play a gig anywhere it would be…

Sporting Clube De Londres. We’ve tried many times, Paula won’t kick the keyboard guy off.

We think you should listen to…

Ugly, Sorry, The Orielles, Squid, Hinds, The Magic Gang

If we could see anyone play live it would be…

Bon Scott era AC/DC
