Sigrid Raabe is now 20. She was picked up by her first record label at the tender age of 17. Recently she signed to Island/Universal. But not before triggering a huge label race resulting in the West London behemoth winning out on the Norwegian singer. She also looks fresh-faced enough to have been a cast member of Dawson’s Creek. Except she’s not old enough, of course…

Want to find out what all the fuss is about? Check her out when she arrives in Brighton for The Great Escape festival on May 18th to 20th.

The plaintive singer hits the south coast already delivering on her promising talent. Her new single, ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’, is a worthy showcase for her impressive vocal control and power. Whether it’s about a suffocating love interest or parent is another question. Maybe it’s just about her new corporate record label overlords? Regardless, she can damn well sing.

When asked about the meaning of the song, she said: “It may be a message to your cat, telling her that she’s not the master of the universe. Or maybe it’s just a really long DM saying you’re SO done with someone.”

Born and raised in Ålesund, which sits at the entrance of a UNESCO-protected fjord surrounded by sea and mountains, Sigrid is currently recording her debut album in London, Berlin and Bergen.

Oh, and she’s really into Adele. We caught up with Sigrid ahead of her Great Escape gig to ask her the burning questions…

If I had to describe my music in 3 words, I’d use…
Energetic, funny and sometimes also a tiny bit dramatic. Mwhaha…

My favourite film ever is…
Amélie or Lost In Translation. Or Her. Gaaah! I can’t decide. All of them are great. I like films.

The most famous person I’ve met is…
I haven’t really talked to any famous persons.

The song I hate the most is…
I can’t come up with a song I hate. I find it kind of hard to HATE on songs.

The worst job I’ve ever had is…
Hmmmm, I’ve liked my jobs! I worked at Oliviers & Co, a shop selling olive oils for a couple of months, and then at the local aquarium.

If I was in a tribute band it would be…
Definitely a tribute band to Adele.

My favourite word is…
Mhyp. It doesn’t mean anything, but it’s a word we use a lot in my family.

If I had a super power I’d want it to be…
Stop time

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
Tokyo or Seoul – my dream destinations.

I think you should listen to…
Hajk – my favourite Norwegian band at the moment. Or DePresno if you’re into a supersilky/husky/cool voice, or Aurora if you want to be blown away

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
Adele – I still haven’t seen her live.
