We asked RB to select five records that have inspired him, get to know the influence behind South London’s silkiest R&B…

It feels like every piece I write at the moment begins with some shout-out to something exciting that’s happening musically in south London. Well this one is no different, courtesy of Peckham’s Rye Wax affiliated label and party starters Cotch International.

Their third official release as a label, RB’s Who Am I EP came out in April, and further cements Cotch’s burgeoning reputation as purveyors of south London’s most exuberant new talent. Hailing from Forest Hill, Sam Patrick Reid is RB, a 23 year old singer, songwriter and producer who has cut his teeth singing on Nines’ One Foot Out and writing for Grammy award winner Lyrica Anderson. Who Am I marks RB’s first solo release, and his first up front and centre at the mic.

Who Am I is a collection of sultry R&B slow jams, sexy and alluring with the exception of closing cut ‘Caught Up’ which sees RB lovesick in the studio drinking tea. With RB, Studio Pirates, and Drake collaborator Nav Michael on production duties, the EP is a hazy, trap-infused ode to late night connections. RB’s silky vocal murmurs in your ear over a rumbling low-end and shuddering synths, “I know what you want, so come and get it from me” he sings, confident and affecting in the record’s brightest cut ‘Palm Springs’. “You make me lose my mind”, goes the title track amidst echoing percussion. A certified new talent, and definitely one to watch, keep an eye as RB takes things hot and heavy.

ELI SOSTRE – SAVING FACE

Crazy production game on this track, especially the hi-hat patterns and the whole eerie vibe.

TYUS – MY HEART

One of my favourite artists and his soulful voice just bodies this track.

SAVANNAH RAE – IMPRESSED

I fell in love with the guitar here. Her melodies and flows complete the track for me.

YOUNG N FLY – MASERATI

This is a turn-up track that always gets me hyped. The 808s are killer, I always try to incorporate heavy low end in my own tracks.

SONDER – TOO FAST

A real soulful vibe, the song writing and transitions are too cold!
