We caught up with the ‘Lady Lady’ singer to find out about the tracks that have inspired his sound.
Masego is a hip hop, jazz pioneer & multi-instrumentalist – think Anderson Paak meets Kamasi Washington with some N.E.R.D mixed in for good measure. With his single ‘Lady Lady’ which was released last month, we’ve been noticing him on the UK shores more and more recently and will be playing London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire in September.
We chatted to the man himself to find out about a few tracks that have inspired his sound.
Michael Jackson- The Way You Make Me Feel
This was charming and pimpinsh to me. I love the chase but more so the sensual yet classy mood throughout the video. I feel like this version of Michael is what I channelled for Lady Lady.
Kanye West – Addiction
I love loops. That guitar loop with those drums is hiphop to me. The sample is so soulful. That version of Kanye is what influences me. That song grows and breathes and the beat was a canvas that allowed Ye’ to get his thoughts off the way he did.
Roy Hargrove- Strasbourg/ St. Denis
This is Jazz music. Cool, Fly, Pimp, Simple yet complex. It’s a conversation. It’s a story. It picks my mood up anytime I hear it. I strive for my music to do the same for someone else.
Kirk Franklin-Brighter Day
If this aint the most choir control ever, I don’t know what is. The soul, joy and groove in this record is wild to me. I got obsessed with vamps and just jam sessions after hearing this tune.
Kendrick Lamar – Ignorance Is Bliss
“Indubitably I’m too street, Indubitably I’m a do me” I could quote this entire record. K says so much I feel and/or agree with. The emotion behind what he says, off kilter flows and King-like presentation makes a dangerous place sound like one of the wonders of the world.
