Homeshake // In Short

Fancy some kissin’ and huggin’? How about some makin’ lovin’? Or maybe just some wakin’ up and gettin’ high? You can’t go wrong with any of those options believes Canadian-born Peter Sagar – aka Homeshake. And to prove his point he wrote an entire tune in their honour – fittingly titled – ‘KHMLWGH’.

It’s one of the stand out tracks of his new album, Fresh Air, released earlier in the year. And it’s one of the reasons that London in Stereo HQ is so excited to host Homeshake on our very own stage at this week’s The Great Escape festival in Brighton.

But don’t fret if you can’t get down to the South Coast to hear his chilled slowjams radiate across the city. Because he’s playing the Scala in Kings Cross on Wednesday (May 17th) and returns by popular demand for another show on May 24th.

Until then, it’s worth taking a close look at the video for ‘KHMLWGH’. It was shot by Jim Larson in an abandoned swingers’ hotel in Pennsylvania. And in the director’s own words: “Homeshake’s music – and especially ‘KHMLWUGH’ – is very romantic. But it’s romantic in an odd, slightly unsettling way.

“The goal was to have a visual that got the same feeling across. What better way to accomplish that than to capture the songwriter exploring an abandoned swingers’ hotel in the Poconos with his partner and bandmates? It’s romantic but also a little fucked up.”

For those of you who have never got loved up in Pennsylvania, the Poconos were at one time a popular lovers’ destination – yes, with champagne glass-shaped hot tubs. Today, the most action you see is at the ATV playground.

Sagar was born in the bleak isolation of the secluded prairie city of Edmonton, Canada. He worked with friends in a number of local bands before picking up and moving to Montreal in 2011 to begin recording under the Homeshake moniker.

His music is deliriously groovy, sexy and positive – without ever feeling rushed. Which made us want to find out more about what made him. But when we asked him the burning questions we didn’t expect his answers to feature Drake’s mum.
