Hatchie is the golden shoegaze-y pop project of Brisbane-based Harriette Pilbeam. Building on the success of her debut single ‘Try’, which has racked up an impressive one-million plays on Spotify and is somewhat of an underground success in her native Australia, she’s returned with ‘Sure’, a neon-pop banger with a riff straight out of the 1990s.

The single was written in just a day on a whim when a melody jumped into Pilbeam’s head. “I wrote ‘Sure’ about people I know falling in and out of the same relationship issues as we grew out of our teens into early adulthood,” she explains. “When I initially wrote it, it was about a couple that decided to give it ‘one more shot’ over and over again because they couldn’t bear to be apart. When I think about all the lyrics now I realise that it could be interpreted in a number of different ways.”

With live dates already secured for the first part of this year at the Great Escape and SXSW, as well as an Australian tour, 2018 is looking bright for Hatchie. We caught up with the singer-songwriter to delve a little deeper into her favourite things.

Three words to describe my music…
Glittery dream pop

Favourite ever film…
I could never choose a favourite EVER, but my favourite film of 2017 was Get Out.

Favourite Instagram account…
I’m obsessed with Diet Prada (@diet_prada) at the moment. Also Charli XCX (@charli_xcx), her social media presence is wild.

The best venue I’ve played…
The first venue that springs to mind is The Metro Theatre in Sydney; we’d never played it until recently and it was great. Sometimes bigger venues have such a new, high-tech set up that there’s no warmth or character. The Metro is a good mix of rough around the edges but with a good set up for bands.

The song I can’t listen to…
The Horses by Daryl Braithwaite

The worst job I’ve ever had…
Making burgers four days a week for a year or two while I was a poor uni student. After that I vowed to never work a job that didn’t involve air conditioning.

My favourite meal to cook…
I’m awful at cooking so I honestly rarely enjoy it! Nailing a delicious, indulgent carbonara is probably when I’m most chuffed with myself.

If I was in a tribute band it would be…
Probably a tribute to The Corrs.

My favourite word…
Serendipity

If I had a superpower I’d want it to be…
Seeing into the future.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
Amsterdam, so I can get another chance to go back there.

I think you should listen to…
Tamaryn’s album Cranekiss.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
I’m dying to see New Order again.

Hatchie plays The Great Escape (16th-19th May).
