Who’s be Charlotte? She’s 19-years-old, hails from Dundee in Scotland and is one of the most talented singer/songwriters of her generation.
Charlotte Brimner – who leads the outlandish trio Be Charlotte – is a musical polymath who is blessed with otherworldly skills. What else could explain the ease in which she jumps from pop to hip hop in a flash without losing her ability to summon up good musical vibes?
At this year’s Great Escape festival in Brighton all eyes will be on Charlotte and her band. She’ll be joined by James Smith (keyboard, bass) and David Calder (drums) as they show off their burgeoning chops and youthful promise.
The trio recently returned from a tour of Asia playing in Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam and Hong Kong, as well as spending two weeks recording at Karma Studios where The Libertines and Placebo recently recorded albums. They also played SXSW in Texas earlier this year.
With a hot new single called ‘One Drop’, the band are riding high. According to Charlotte, it’s a song about ‘the sense of being unable to clearly see what’s in front of you’. That’s a forgivable sensation for her given that she’s quit school to pursue her musical career.
What tunes have caught Charlotte’s ear recently? We asked her to offer her inside scoop on who’s hot at this year’s Great Escape and to select a tune from each of those artists. Drop the needle now:
Rag & Bone Man
I love his new album! I saw him play a stripped back set at SXSW and it was amazing. It’s cool to see someone who’s worked so hard for so long get the recognition he deserves.
Love this song. I also saw her play SXSW recently. The whole album is great.
We played together at TGE First50, her show was really cool.
Joe and MFTM actually supported us at our first ever Be Charlotte gig. We were in Asia when his song started to go viral on YouTube and it’s so good to see something this authentic getting the attention it deserves.
Amazing voice! Love his tunes.
This is such an anthem. Don’t Kill My Vibe is all chorus. I like the production – but I’ve chosen the acoustic version of the song as it’s great, too.
Really looking forward to seeing her play live for the first time. She has some great tracks
King and Cross is such a great tune. I just came across him randomly on the TGE line-up. I’m lucky enough to be playing in Iceland later this year so hopefully I’ll get to see him play.
We played together in Hamburg earlier this year. Everyone in the band thinks they’re great. I know they are from Brighton – so it will probably be a big hometown show!
We played together in January at Eurosonic. We took Ann Marie’s spot after she misplaced her passport! We only got the call a few hours before the gig and the band lent us use their drumsticks.
I just heard this song on Spotify – and then noticed they are playing TGE, as well. Pretty cool stuff and I’m hoping to catch them live.
The production is really interesting – definitely my kinda vibe. It’s got a unique edge to it.
I just really love her voice. The songs are so catchy!
