The countdown to Field Day has begun! With less than two weeks until the annual jamboree kicks off in Victoria Park we continue our look into the festival’s always remarkable line-up. This time around we tracked down young Irish singer, Áine Cahill.

She’s not an obvious choice for the boundary-pushing party in the park. Playing an interesting contrast with the likes of Aphex Twin, Omar Souleyman and Run the Jewels. But the 21-year-old should certainly be able to hold her own thanks to her powerful singing and moody torch songs.

Hailing from County Cavan, she mashes up edgy pop with classic vocal jazz from the 1950s. But she’s no singer/songwriter retro cliché. Instead her lyrical themes are modern and betray a number of contemporary influences, from Beyoncé to Amy Winehouse.

It all kicked off last summer when Áine made her debut at Glastonbury, playing a small tent where she was spotted by the BBC and asked to play an acoustic performance live for TV. Heads were turned with that momentum snowballing into her new EP being readied and being tapped up for this summer’s Field Day.

We wanted to know more. So, we asked Áine the burning questions. Little did we know it would feature unclogging pub toilets and The Lion King…

If I had to describe my music in 3 words, I’d use…
Smooth, chill, vibes

My favourite film ever is…
The Lion King. I love The Lion King, always have. We used to have it on video when I was really young, it got dirty and I wanted to clean it so I washed it in the bathroom sink. Ruined the entire tape. I was heartbroken.

The most famous person I’ve met is…
Justin Tranter. I haven’t really met many famous people, but I met Justin Tranter at a Lady Gaga concert in 2010. He’s a big pop songwriter, he worked with Britney Spears, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber!

The song I hate the most is…
Rebecca Black’s Friday. I don’t really hate songs, but I’m trying to think of a song that really annoys me… and this is possibly the worst song ever.

The worst job I’ve ever had is…
Cleaning toilets in a pub. In my first job, I worked in a pub and I mainly just had to collect empty glasses. But also clean the toilets… I enjoyed working with everyone overall, just not cleaning the toilets!

If I was in a tribute band it would be…
Either The Spice Girls or Destiny’s Child – I would be Beyoncé, of course.

My favourite word is…
Gagged

If I had a super power I’d want it to be…
Fly. I would love to be able to fly. I hate heights, but I love flying. I don’t know how that works, haha…

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
Either Madison Square Garden in New York or Croke Park in Dublin. I would gag.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
Lana Del Rey, always. Or Lady Gaga for the fifth time. And Marina & the Diamonds. My three ultimate faves.
